Monica Perales has roots to Smeltertown and is one of a few of her generation that is following up on the lives and conditions that toughened the residents that settled in Smeltertown Texas to start their lives in this country in the 1890’s. These families settled and raised families in the community of Smeltertown, La Calavera and moved out into the surrounding communities of Buena Vista, Anapra, and into El Paso, Tx proper. This historically Spanish speaking community made up mostly of Mexicans that worked at ASARCO, the cement factory and the brick factory grew with their new country. I am glad to see that the generations after the depression and the war still have an interest
Monica is an associate professor of history at the
University of Houston today in 2007 but be sure that her roots to the community
of Smeltertown will provide a vision for our people well into the future.
